We've officially moved.

It's been intense, cleaning, painting, decorating, and generally moving out...we couldn't have done it without the superior DIY powers of [profile] dr_sneaky, glorious Jan sans lj who tarted up the kitchen so beautifully, and of course [profile] littlemiscowboy and her partner the lovely Bruce Sans LJ, who not only helped us spangle up our old house but helped us pack, move out and then move in to the London place, with a looong trip by lorry in between. [profile] littlemiscowboy drove a godzillatruck with the ease of steering a tricycle. She is now officially ActionChick, cos it's clear she can do anything, anytime, anywhere, at all. The awesomeness of our friends is incomparable. Thank you all.

The London house is full of boxes and bin bags, the Manchester House is fresh and new, painted and scrubbed up, so much so that I regret leaving.

[profile] larians is surprised that I am not ecstatic about returning to London, and of course, I get to catch up with old friends(the big time benefit!) writing and working will get easier, and [profile] larians' career will not depend quite so heavily on Virgin Pendolino. But for all the problems of living oop narth, our little home gave us fun and happiness, summer parties, warm candlelit crimbos, great times with great friends and of course, for me, The Spider's Bride.

I am glad we haven't put the house on the market. [profile] larians laughs and calls me a hoarder when it comes to old cards and jimcrackgewgaws; he doesn't have a word for someone who hoards houses.

Thank you, you are very kind! Funny thing is, this feels so temporary, like there's somewhere else I want to be, not London, not Manchester...don't know what's going on in my head!

Congratulations!
I know it's not quite a 'congratulations' moment, but moving is always so much work that I always feel new houses call for champagne.* So Congratulations!

*I may not be entirely trustworthy on this point, so great is my love of the fizz. I have been known to claim that finding a good fishmongers calls for champagne. And get away with it.

A sign!

Hmm...in a synchronicitous moment, my colleagues yesterday discovered one of the best 'listed' fish and chip shops in London town just around the corner from work. Clearly, this is an omen signalling the wisdom of your words. Champagne shall be ours!

I'd forgotten how much fun it was driving a 7.5tonne lorry :-)
Only downside is that my left arm aches as 2nd gear was a bitch to get and you *really* had to wrench it in.

Glad you're settling in OK. We should make plans to come down for a weeked in slightly more regular forms of transport.

Thank you for all your help and yes, you must come down for a weekend of stuff...I do think it's a shame you won't be driving a lorry though, I think it's your natural vehicle!

I tried "landlord" and found that I soon became "cantankerous person who thinks ill of those who abuse his trust". Is there a word for "landlord who wants no tenants but does not want to part with lovely flat he never uses"?

Property Speculator?

Of course, in these days of falling property prices, there's not much fun to be had in that.

That's where the name Peckham Rye came from: the thought that the property is declining in value. (Though that were a house, not a flat).

Arf, arf, arf! I only have the one house, and no stovepipe hat. Ergo, I cannot be an evil landowner yet...
but you may call me 'Baroness' if you like.

Oops, sorry Debbie; Rude of me to talk to Bryan on your page without acknowledging the pleasure of your relocation. Not that I have any wish to move back to London... my club provides me with an occasional central London bed at a reasonable price and without the daily hassle.

No offence dreamt of or taken! It's lovely to hear from you.

We found the hassle of getting here too great to continue, with each of us 3/4 days in London, overlapping very occasionally, our quality of life was suffering immensely. I hope we can adapt to this new home. Your club sounds like an excellent idea!

I can understand hoarding houses- we always leave a part of ourselves in the things.
Houses strike me as being, at best, things that hoard occupants though. Older houses get very good at. It's not so much that they need to hang onto a particular set of occupants, but rather that they collect mementoes and impressions of them all that they keep concealed under layers of wallpaper and in cracks in the floorboards. When they no longer have any living occupants they seem to go a bit mad and stop taking care of their appearance, and then one day (unless they are very lucky), they just die.

I love them best in the mad/unoccupied phase because they sort of mutter to themselves in interesting ways. Maybe thats why I like doing art with abandoned houses in it. Your Manchester house sounds like it is very respectable and sane though. It will, I am sure, be quite ok.

'They sort of mutter to themselves in interesting ways'

I know exactly what you mean! Love your houses:-)

Ours is respectable and sane, but the garden is its Id where nothing is tame and monsters lurk...

An old friend of mine recently bought a house with a very wild garden - and discovered that the previous occupant had been a head gardener at a local garden come plant preservation place and the garden has pretty much the best soil in the area and several very rare plants growing in it! He is keeping the rare plants, and turning much of the garden over to growing food, for which it is ideal. Lucky chap. His garden ghost was a pro gardener.
