My brother sent me an e-mail entitled 'You may remember.' The body of his message went as follows:

Life imitates art:

Do you remember "Vision on A Stick"?

After my reply saying I hadn't the faintest clue what he was talking about, he wrote:

Vision on a stick was a character you invented (with others) and used to tell me bed time stories about, just after you read me the Narnian chronicles.

You described as "Like a hatstand on wheels, but where you would normally put your hat was a big eye ball swiveling in all directions."

I don't have a single memory of Vision on a Stick. Maybe I was every bit as strange as my brother suggests. Or maybe he's just messing with my head.

Cute bots though.

Very Tim Burton... we were lucky enough to get to see an exhibition of his artwork for his films, along with props and models from them, when we in Canada recently and 'vision on a stick' would have fitted in very well there.

Ooh, I love Tim Burton! I admit the Alice thing was dire to my tastes, but in general I like his vision, whether on a stick or not...

I have found quite a few of his more recent films to be weak as well - what strikes me are the ones closest to his early artistic vision. He is great with his own stories and not so great with other peoples.

'Big Fish' remains one of my all time favourite films. For me, Tim's great weakness is not knowing when to end. He ruins the Wonka film with a protracted and pointless sugary ending and he nearly spoils the Nightmare Before Christmas by making it too long. Sweeney Todd and Sleepy Hollow, I like. Edward Scissorhands...cute, but not a film I'd feel compelled to watch again.

Big Fish I found I didn't like the pacing and it was way too sentimental/sugary for me. Sleepy Hollow is a favourite of mine - Beetlejuice I like, Edward Scissorhands I find touching but I agree I dont re-watch it, Nightmare I love but thats partly as a 'Christmas/Halloween classic'- I must admit that what I really like of Tim Burtons stuff is Stainboy (and the other characters he created around him) and his various associated sketches. I love that stuff because its very much him playing with his ideas unfettered by any sort of need to appeal to anyone else.
