The Russians poison an ex-spy and his daughter by putting a signature poison on their door knob. Nothing happens straight away, and the victims keel over at the same time a few hours later, but survive their ordeal. The plucky Brits detecting that some sort of enigmatic poisoning may have occurred, go to the house to find evidence and leave living animals to die inside it, rather than taking them to Porton Down to be tested for any signs of toxicity.
Well, if I was going to kill someone, I would undoubtedly eschew common weapons like guns or even the drama of a car, instead preferring to use dodgy toxins and methods that everyone connects with me, then I would singularly fail to nail my target, because everyone in the world uses a doorknob, and washy-offy-type rain never happens in Salisbury. Yup, they'd have me bang to rights - if I was a complete moron.
But what we seem to have here is a plethora, a veritable surfeit of morons, presumably on an international level. Because for this to be true, we don't need one government of imbeciles but two; The Russians for foolish convolution that doesn't even work, the Brits for astounding ineptitude of investigation.
Boris Johnson says categorically that some chap at Porton Down told him the poison definitely came from Russia. Porton Down denies this. So already we have evidence of lying on the part of the British Government, albeit the part everyone knows is pathologically unhinged. Add to this the blether about May taking it to Putin, photos of warplanes and nukes, wardrums beaten by idiots who will never see a battlefield, and it's just dizzying, apoplectic in its hubris and stupidity.
Enough. Painting Russia as the bogeyman might have been May's own little Falklands hope for uniting the voters behind whatever version of Brexit the 1922 committee tell her to pursue, but it's a dangerous game. Russia says we're playing with fire? We certainly are, dismissing hard headed intelligence gathering for premature soundbytes, our audience hungry for a few flames to dance around in proper tribal Lord of The Flies stylee. Nothing will happen, surely, with so much Russian money in tory pockets.
But nothing should have happened after Sarajevo.
