Unimpressed

I am not quite sure that last night worked. Friend's 40th on Saturday and regrettably I can't make it as my foster-niece's (?) 18th birthday party falls on the same day, so we'll be off Salisbury way. My solution was to buy him a birthday dinner, and pleasant it was too. But not entirely...
He hasn't properly qualified as a teacher yet, and he's talking about leaving or doing a three day week. He's lost his vape so he's back to smoking, he's sleeping with the ex who broke his heart, and he left the restaurant for about 10 minutes to go meet his dealer, something I have decided not to be annoyed at because there was no intention to be rude. When he returned he was delighted to say that he had been given something a little extra for the party. The party to which he has invited professional colleagues from the school.
I do get that the pressure placed on teachers is absolutely insane, but planning to leave the profession having worked so hard to get where he is seems ridiculous. As for the drug thing, no-one minds a little weed, but he really does seem to be slipping backwards, and I have no idea of how to approach this honestly without being a busybody. After all, we all get off days and this was either one of mine or one of his or both.
He enjoyed his birthday treat, that was what counted. And with that, I have to leave it behind for now.
