So, OK, I stop. But I refuse to let myself be drawn into thinking about the utter mess that is Brexit. I am not even thinking about the house, conflicted as I am on the whole matter.

Instead, I pootle around with genealogy, particularly the more ancient stuff. I have no real way of taking real lineage studies forward without concentration, so have stopped at 1717 with one line. I am that least useful kind of amateur genealogist, the kind that has no actual interest in families though a couple of bizarre links have come up. Where did these Cadwalladers suddenly spring from? Why are there so many German/Eastern European names arising? Back then, to more fascinating stuff, ancient historical groups. Visigoths, Franks, Gauls, Celts, Gallo-Romans and then rather more obscurely, Illyrians and Thracians. I know nothing of Illyrians except that they were pirates, nothing of Thracians at all.

Still, it's quite fun, though not to be taken too seriously. The basic timeline goes something like this:

And in other thoughts, enjoying a little Folk Horror recently, because a friend is involved in the creation of a Live Action Role Playing event within the genre.https://www.ritesofspring.co.uk/the-game It looks pretty cool. Away they'll go to Lundy Island to enjoy the world of The Wicker Man and Children of the Stones. In similar vein, watched Nigel Kneales' 70s plays 'Murrain'and 'Baby.' ... A lot of waiting for the last five minutes, claustrophobia in the country. Flawed, it still works, and I am certain the LARP will be absolutely stunning, but I'll not be making my way to Lundy Island... We may be moving or we may not, but I need to get away from the strange stifled feeling of England all bunched in on itself. It feels like being locked in a cupboard unable to breathe. I don't need more Englishness at all right now, not a single strawberry flavoured muffin crumb of it. No not even with a cup of tea.

Last night I dreamed that R and I were travelling somewhere very cold, so cold we had big mittens to wear. My mother and I were together too, wearing the same suits as one another. Very posh, still didn't feel quite right.

My mum got super into genealogy – not to dig into the ancient stuff, but to look into family branches within a few generations. I've now met more second/third/fourth/fifth cousins once/twice/thrice/etc removed that there's far more than I can ever remember. But most of them have been lovely. There's some hilariously scandalous stuff in our recent history though.
