I've had more pain killers in the last week than I had in 2020.

I think it is an abscess, it is extremely painful. I had a sore throat and high temperature along with all the rest of it, so to be sure of not bringing infection to the dentist, I took a Covid test. I'm negative, all's good. I'll go tomorrow.

But what on earth has been going on with my health over the last week?

That's awful! I've had a lot of dental problems over the years, so I know how that goes. Hopefully a course of antibiotics will knock the infection down and you'll be able to treat the actual source of it. My best wishes to you for a full and speedy recovery...
