White Mad spent most of yesterday fuddled.

She' still hiding under one of the beds, but it's all very chilled. She's ready to be stroked, ready to eat.

It's been determined that she does not have bad teeth, nor a skin condition like mange or ringworm. Next up possibilities are allergies, neuralgia and skin cancer. So we start by treatment for neuralgia, because after that it's steroids which may have unpleasant side effects. I really don't want to have the biopsy because if it's neuralgia she's just going to scratch at it and open it, then we get abscesses and all the rest.

But right now, she's serene, which is more than I am re Putin and Ukraine etc. I've tried writing posts about it several times and can't, not without depressing myself to an extreme. I'm a European and I want that f*cker right out of my house. I don't think he will stop unless checked, not until he has his iron curtain again. He may pause of course, but it's not hard to see him slowly waltzing up to the doors of Poland. I say him, he'll be going nowhere unsafe natch, probably even now hiding out in a bunker in the Urals.

But I have things that must be done today, and it's time to take a leaf from White Mad's book, let the world turn and for today, just turn with it. Not because I don't care but because everything else is paralysis and fury.

Totally agree with you re Putin. And that he won't stop on his own or, likely, be stopped by others.

It's truly criminal what he has done, is doing, to the lives of ordinary people both inside and outside of his own country.

I have little hope that the economic sanctions will do much more than slow him a little--and that, over time--especially since we seem reluctant to embargo his oil and gas income.

Certainly, nothing that will immediately affect the vast and deep pain now being inflicted on the Ukrainian people. While we "stand in solidarity," they suffer and die...

Hopefully the sanctions will have some impact but beyond these and pouring cash/supplies into Ukraine, there seem no other recourse short of the No Fly Zone.

Still, I am holding out for some miracle of diplomacy, despite my growing fear that peace relies on that most ungodl solution; a bullet between one man's ears.

If I could choose 2 things, from your list of recourses, it would be the supplies and the bullet.

A CIA operative, whose duty station between 1966 and 1969 was West Germany, is said to have "despised warfare and believed that applied intelligence was its antithesis."

But it's my understanding that he threw an enemy agent down a stairwell to his death when that was his only option.

During the same period, I directly confronted my government and risked imprisonment over my opposition to the Vietnam war and I am deeply, deeply sorry that it has come to this...

Well done for standing by your principles. I can only imagine how hard it must have been.

I can't believe that this is happening. Two world wars and innumerable conflicts later, and one man's ambition brings us to this. Where we go from here I don't know.

How old is the white cat?

We had this conversation before when yr black male started behaving irrascibly, I do believe. But elderly cats do seem to be susceptable to dementia. The Meezer (who lived to the ripe old age of 20) was quite mad in the year or so before her death and began acting in strange, unpredictable ways.

We did! I would call it dementia (and I think our boy definitely does have that) except that White Mad has always been crazy, and there's no change in the tone of her craziness from when she was 7 weeks old to now, her fourteenth year. She's at least partially deaf too, and the vet thought she had brain lesions. But actually the truth is (whispers) She's a fairy cat.
