Of Milk and Manuscripts

smokingbootNope, summat's wrong. The milk that was delivered late last night instead of this morning tastes... strange. Strong. Not off, not on the turn, but the point just before it starts to turn. I wonder where this milk is being kept before delivery. The cats won't touch it. I hate to do this because I want to support dairies outside of supermarkets, but I've already complained about the weirdly inconsistent deliveries; last week I got 5 pints on Thursday, which means that by the time we get to the final pint, it's off. Time to cancel but I don't want anyone to get a hard time just before Xmas. So I think the thing to do is phone them today and cancel for the New Year.
I don't mind paying a bit extra, and I guess I can get used to some issues of delivery, but it's got to be good milk. That's just how we roll.
Contacted them, someone cut off/hung up at the other end. So they get an email instead and the standing order stopped. Then they send me an email saying that they don't accept cancellations by email. So I phone the head office. All done now, but why is everything such a palaver? And what on earth is wrong with that milk?
Meanwhile, the bro has been in touch. An old friend/inspiration/mentor of his has just died (something very odd about last week, all in all) and along with this news,he mentioned another reason for contacting me. He has been asked to review a 140 page book and finds himself unwilling to commit, so he wondered if I would do it. Here are some excerpts, tasters if you will:
I actually think there might be a market out there for something like this. Does it back into the epic awfulness of, say, Plan 9 from Outer Space or Orca Killer Whale? If anyone other than my brother made this request I would be very reasonable and look it over for say, £150 a page, cheap as chips. Indeed, he offered to pay me to 'ghost' review it. But I can't take money from him and while I think I could be neutral, there's always doubt because this is Orb Lord's latest book, something something Camelot. Bro says that if he reads the whole thing, his kidneys will give out. I see his point. Personally, I'd rather drink 5 pints of vaguely off milk.
