I did some things that were difficulf for me yesterday, and I got help in doing so. This is important and private enough for me not to discuss with others right now; I might put up a post to remind myself, and that will stay private too. Some things are complex.

Dreamed of a long complicated phone call with King Charles. It was amicable enough but I could feel him losing interest, in contrast to the dreams I have had of Queen Elizabeth which were extremely friendly. In said dreams R was chatting to a Hungarian woman, which kind of gave me a lead into what this might be about; Hungary is a place where early European DNA shows the emergence of that most handy basket of mutations, the ability of adult humans to digest milk, and there it seems my ancestors were too. Though it feels magic to me, it is no great miracle, my ancestors have been pretty much everywhere; I suspect many if not all of us can say that. I think the dream is about the passage of Time. It may be that I am not interested in being a New Carolingian, or that the New Carolingians will not be interested in me.

The parliament building is not pretty. Maybe it looks great from above, but on first impressions it is like a collection of gym halls together, a kind of university campus feel.I cannot love the look. The security staff are very well meaning, the people give it a pleasant helpful vibe, but there's just nothing special about it. I admit though, I am in love with Westminster Palace, for all the wickedness and criminality it has harboured in its time. Still, in my heart, I am awed by the Mother of Parliaments and feel stupidly at home there. Having said that, I can understand the desire to create a place for parliament that has a poetry of the people about it, something that tears away from old structures built on oppression. The wall on Canongate does that, and teaches too; and maybe I need a proper tour of the place to understand the architectural ideas behind it, or see hidden beauties.

Right now, I will say that it has at least one thing in common with Westminster Palace; whatever one thinks of the place, one cannot be entirely impressed by those within it. I honestly do not know if the SNP can govern. They have one idea that is very popular with the people of Scotland, and I have spoken to a couple of excellent MSPs but...there's just something odd about it as a governing group. A local development here has been rejected unanimously by the council on numerous occasions but is still magically happening, something to do with 'The Reporter' having decided. The local MSP says she will support our movement against it but doesn't actually do anything much. Something always seems to get devolved to a higher power with neither name nor accountability. Things happen and nothing can be done, or so it seems.

I can't help thinking that if Labour became Scottish Labour, less involved with the Union of Great Britain and more just about Scotland, it would be a contender. Scottish Labour, Scottish Conservatism, independent of Westminster might be able to make headway against a party with one over-riding popular idea, and possibly little real sense of statecraft or active governance.
But then, I don't know where these parties get or would get their funding from. And honestly, I don't know who among these has the active gift of government. It seems rarer than I ever imagined.

I found myself happier in John Knox's old house, now the Scottish Story Telling Centre. I'm going to see if it has more to get involved with come the new year.
