So, what do I do when I am depressed about the new Pope? I go rooting out ancient prophecies to twiddle around my brain and entertain me. Anything is better than work.

These are paraphrased excerpts from the prophecies of St Malachi in the 11th/12th century, who predicted that there would be 112 popes from - well, hey I don't know his starting point(amended to add: from the papacy of Celestine II). Malachi would give each pope a little epithet that would tell you something about said pontiff, and sometimes the signs reach the point of desperate straining. JP II's malachy monicker was 'From the toil of the sun' and many have translated that as they like. Either way, the prophecies are unequivocal; there are only supposed to be two more popes. And the next one is:

The Glory of the Olive. The Order of St. Benedict has said this Pope will come from their order. It is interesting that Jesus gave his apocalyptic prophecy about the end of time from the Mount of Olives. This Pope will reign during the beginning of the tribulation Jesus spoke of. The 111th prophesy is "Gloria Olivae" (The Glory of the Olive). The Order of Saint Benedict has claimed that this pope will come from their ranks. Saint Benedict himself prophesied that before the end of the world his Order, known also as the Olivetans, will triumphantly lead the Catholic Church in its fight against evil.

What I find interesting about this is that our new rottweiler doesn't seem to come from the Benedictines -- can't find the info to hand and am ready to be corrected if anyone knows - but has taken the Benedictine name. Does this mean the Vatican keeps an eye on the prophecies? it's an interesting coincidence if they don't. And if they do, they can't be happy about the final pope, Petrus Romanus:

Peter the Roman:The 112th prophesy states: In the final persecution of the Holy Roman Church there will reign Petrus Romanus, who will feed his flock amid many tribulations; after which the seven-hilled city will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people.

With that in mind, what right minded pope would call himself Peter, especially the 112th? It's like advertising the show is cancelled just cos everyone's expecting it. Such an announcement would generate hordes of nutters lurking in the ruins of Meggido checking all passers-by for barcodes on their heads or some other 'mark of the beast.'

I'm out of here, it's too weird even for me.

Still, heartened by the presence of a lurid storyline, I can now go focus on work.

That is rather strange and I'm in no way responsibl. My Sinning draws the line at making up gibbering prophecies

I put it to you sir, that Saint Malachy was some kind of bishop/archbishop of Bangor. This means you are to blame!

I'm pretty sure that these prophecies were actually a 16th century forgery. There have been some seriously back-bending prezel-twists to try to get them to match up with recent Popes.

Besides, the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls has a portrait of every Pope, and they've still got 18 spots left.

I mean, if you believe in that sort of thing.

I suspend disbelief in the face of great stories.

I understand there's lots of controversy about whether the prophecies were forgeries or just mislaid for 400 years and there's certainly some desperate reaching. What I find interesting is the synchronicity of Benedict XVI's choice of name alongside the prophetic expectation of Benedictine leadership in the days before the last pope. It's just too fine a coincidence not to beat into pulp fiction!
