Days of Prang
Sep. 12th, 2005 09:08 amLooks like I was fated not to make this Maelstrom; First there was
larians in hospital (What do we say when Dr Death tells us a condition can't be helped? We say 'How interesting. I would like you to refer me to a specialist now please.') Want to know how to be the perfect patient?
Sort the problem.
Sort the problem.
Sort the problem.
If your doctor won't help you, find one who will. Please, no more GP declarations of 'It can't be cured.' 9 times out of 10 this is bollocks, and the 10th time, you may as well force life to be enjoyable anyway. It behoves you to be stoic when you are dead, not before...
And I don't want to hear it any more.
Then there was Surya, our little girl cat, who, on Monday, had a lump the size of a golf ball in her side and was not at all happy. Then came Tuesday and Larians' op, and on Wednesday, I got her to the vet. They operated early next morning and found a rupture about an inch long beneath her skin. They told us they could see her intestines and internals through it. The danger was of the whole lot tumbling out. Much stitching occurred.
Seems little Surya got on the wrong end of a larger predator, a dog or a fox they think; at which point she was very close to death indeed - the split didn't need to be bigger, a few days, a sudden movement, and the mess would have been just the same as if she had died between a dog's jaws. I don't understand though, how a bite could perforate her muscle wall and not her skin. What kind of teeth do that? Or is it just the pressure of a jaw?
After she was brought home, more bleeding occurred, and we had to take her back again. Her temperature was up, they kept her in. Now, we have her back, 10 days of isolation and no strenuous activity. Hah! The little thing is painkillered up, and as far as she is concerned, she feels fine and wants to go chase birds outside (a definite no-no!) We are not even supposed to allow her to play with Ralik, in case they tear out the stitches, a feat she is quite capable of without any help from him.
So there were visits to the hospital and visits to the vet; thank god for
larians' mum, who drove me around and helped out in a hundred irreplaceable ways, kind and practical. He is on the mend now, his face laughing again. My dear ones are back, getting better, and that is what matters.
I am, however, somewhat tired.

Date: 2005-09-12 10:49 am (UTC)Humans get them too....
Skin is quite tough (specially cats skin) and many dog teeth are reasonably blunt so whilst it may not have pierced the skin is possible it may have caused under trauma to the muscles....
Cats are bloody amazing though and get better from all sorts according to a vet mate... you should never have a cat put down for losing a limb... have it amputated as most manage superbly on 3.... they are laso obscenely good at fighting infection... probably cos they eat so much filth!
