And the days grew sombre though the sun's light
overhead deepened by richer hue
and flames of coloured worlds.
They held their breath,those people
while we ordered Eggs Benedict
and shook our heads at Chilcot,
at graffitti three streets away
and bombs three worlds away.
It was the Halloween summer
when everyone let their tiny monsters out
and the buried lifted hands out of the earth.
when strange angels of no kind mien
sat upon the roofs and long shadows
spilled everywhere, in restaurants, in bars
in pubs, out on the street, all waiting.
And pumpkins never to be carved still grinned,
For Jack-O-Lantern keeps all demons out,
'cept those invited. We have let them in,
And will be haunted long past All Soul's Night.
And none will pity us past All Soul's Night.
