This specimen, along with his/her chums at http://www.ojibway.ca/spiders.htm is extraordinary. In fact, despite the fact s/he (anyone know about spidersexes?) makes me shudder, got to go further and say s/he's rather beautiful.

Tried playing with the zoom, making beastie run towards me, getting bigger and bigger, and I learned something:

Typing from under one's desk is hard.

There's a very cool website (I won't give you the link because you probably weren't planning to live under your desk) with vid clips of the mating dances of jumping spiders. They're adorable.

It's bad enough when they scuttle, they really shouldn't leap...

I'll take leaping spiders over flying cockroaches any day. :D

My mother 'met' one of these in Singapore, some kind of white spotted specimen landed on her cardigan sleeve. She threw away the cardigan and family legend tells us; 'screamed for a week'.

The flying cockroaches in California are extremely large. My father saw the shadow of one on the wall and swore it was a B-52. ;~)

It's very satisfying to smack them out of the air, especially if you happen to have a tennis racket handy.

It's less pleasant when they sneak up on you.

I hadn't thought of that. It would be an interesting competitive sport.

I'm so relieved to discover that I'm not the only one who thinks that they're lovely to look at close up.

Depends just how close. Its charm diminished for me when I enlarged it 400%:-O
