This time chosen for me by the mighty [livejournal.com profile] nyarbaggytep,cheering me up on a sickie day!

Scent, Opulence, Triangles, Flourish, Charm

My sense of smell is pretty well developed; My current favourite perfume is Tom Ford's Black Orchid, which is exquisite and sexy,all dark chocolate and patchouli and spices... Scent is memory and evocation, of people and places. Prada's latest limited edition is a lovely infusion of orange flowers with lots of tuberose underneath; It reminds me of mediteranean bedrooms with wooden shutters and white cotton sheets, orange trees outside in a courtyard, a fantasy Cordoba/Seville/Florence I know very well. Meanwhile, back in reality land, bluebell woods, jasmine, the sea, some things can never be captured in a bottle...if I follow my nose I find adventure and magic.

Oh yes, let's all be rich and play Kings and Queens of diamonds!
I've been perfectly happy poor too.
Opulence is not just a bank balance; It's a velvet view of life. Important not to let it cloy. I love opulence, but sometimes I work best in sparcity and silence. Then opulence is a gift of language, the senses, the mind. I love it all.

Wow! Tough and interesting...triangles = pyramids = funky! Emotional triangles, hmm, I would say there are always more choices, and people often get stuck between the two most important/favourite/necessary. Who insists that we make decisions in such a linear fashion? No wonder we get mixed up and unhappy. Triangles are mady up of straight lines but people aren't!

This is my favourite word of the 5, even more so than Charm. I love style and verve and vivacity. Wouldn't it be great if we all accepted our personal zesty flourish as we walk in and walk out, and applauded others for theirs instead of this culture of bogus modesty? And then there's that sense of Flourishing as in 'To Thrive.' I like everything to create, grow wild, be strong, be absurd and majestic and incredible, triumphant. Life can be so tough, the best riposte is to thrive like a goddam weed in manure. Curdles karma and c*nts alike. So lets live and flourish!

How does anyone define charm? I really don't have a clue. Is charm a thing you can knowingly manipulate, or does even realising you have charm curtail it? Studied charm is charmless. I can never work out what charms me. Good manners I guess, and flattery oh yes! Beyond that, I am easily beguiled:-) Am I charming? Uh, very much depends on the judge and jury!

I love the idea of thriving like a god damn weed in manure as the best riposte of all. I so agree. Vaguely along the same lines as Voltaire's thing from Candide, "to achieve happiness you should cultivate your own garden". Or something like that.

I remember Candide! Twas grim but powerful. Would you like some words? You can ignore them if you like, but just in case you fancy;

Dreams, generations, certainty, sensuality, play

My friend Alice is curating an exhibit at the New York Public Library on Candide - they're calling it "Scandal and Success" (a title she doesn't care for) and she's making the argument that, 250 years since the publication, the book is singularly adaptable, and this flexibility in terms of mode/genre has led to early forms of fan-fic and interaction that test all kinds of generic boundries. She tells me it's been adapted and expanded by fans into a graphic novel, a play, operetta, sex farce, opera, porn, travelogue, oriental tale... and hods more that I can't remember! It opens in October, and I'm already excited.

Ahem. Also, if you have the energy or the inspiration, I like this meme and I'd like some words. :)

Wow, fascinating idea. I've seen on opera based on Candide a very long time ago starring Nicholas somebody (played the sheriff in some version of Robin Hood) The music was unfortunately forgettable, but I do agree that Candide itself is utterly adaptable, because the point remains; we must tend our garden.

Oh for some cash to visit New York! Feh to my current empty pockets!

And for your delectation and delight, here are your five: Requite, Wanderer, Hidden, City, Challenge
