There was a woman lived in this heat.
on nothing but cherry juice crushed on ice
She sang of a man with a bottled devil
who beckoned her to the river shore

Midnight she saw his body floating
alongside a cork and some broken glass
She sent me a postcard from Chicago
Warning about the river demon.

Sipping out in a whisky sunset
An alligator winked at me.
His gift was this house by the river,
Mine was a secret he can keep
