We were so ill last night, all we could do was down a little champagne and Chinese, and watch Wolf of Wall Street. It was actually a lot of fun for such a toned down day. This morning the sun is shining, and everything is bright and happy looking. I am still a cocktail of cough medicines, but at least they're working. The thing that's weirdest is how weak I am, how lifting anything or doing anything tires me out. I can't wait for this to be gone; we have the camping weekend soon.
The news is ferocious; of Israel/Gaza much is said: I have always wanted to visit Israel, truth is, I feel more at home with its history and culture than with that of Palestine, simply because of friends like Inbaal, and because I grew up on bible stories. Caroline wanted to take me to see Ramallah, but it never happened. Despite my innate historical sympathy with Israel, the continued bombing of Palestine seems insane, really horrifying. It's like watching a friend turn into some kind of werewolf.
And in this country? Well, the discovery of kiddy fiddlers in the eschelons of Westminster continues to wring hands. There is something chilling about the government's inability to distance itself from the very establishment that hid this stuff in the first place.
In the 1980s our attorney general Baron Michael Havers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Havers,_Baron_Havers) made the decision to suppress knowledge of Peter Hayman's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Hayman_(diplomat) paedophiliac activities. It wasn't the only suppressed information by a long chalk. Who has the government nominated to lead investigations into allegations of paedophiliac actvities in Westminster? Only Havers sister, Baroness Butler-Sloss. As well as the very clear potential for a conflict of interests, today's Telegraph takes its lead from the Times in mentioning that she has already concealed some information about sexual offenders (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/10963332/Baroness-Butler-Sloss-hid-claims-of-bishops-sex-abuse.html) she did not want to mention the bishop named in the article because he was very old and 'The press would love a bishop.' Clearly, thwarting the press was much more important than a transparent and fair demonstration of justice.
Often I wonder why I want to emigrate, why I always dream of running far away. There are lots of reasons I suppose, but one is this: There is something so gut wrenching about a land which has such fine ideals and so desperately wants to ignore them. To quote Uncle Bill "Lilies that fester smell far worse than weeds." Forget lions and bulldogs and red roses. This is the land of the festering lily. Not mad, not like the hell is happening in Gaza and Israel. Just corrupt, a slower kind of madness.
*Warning: potential presence of dog Latin.
