900 migrants drowned. It's murder.

They needed help. Could they have been helped? Our policy is not to help. We have a deliberate policy of letting them die as a form of discouragement. http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/oct/27/uk-mediterranean-migrant-rescue-plan?CMP=EMCNEWEML6619I2

The lowest point in civilisation is not when we know nothing, have nothing and can do nothing. It's when we know everything, have everything and still do nothing.

There was a Portuguese boat alongside this ship as it was sinking. The reason that so many people died is because they were locked in the hold and the portholes sealed.

You can argue the rights and wrongs of not having active patrols in preparation for sinking ships but to say that deliberate policy killed these people is just false.

Or rather, the blame should be placed where it belongs - at the bastards that locked them in the hold.

Thanks for replying, and especially for phoning that afternoon; I was upset. I am glad that had there been UK ships in the water, they wouldn't have let them drown, that this law of the sea remains.

But I still consider the current gov policy of not contributing to search and rescue missions deplorable, and this justification that people will only stop trying if it becomes even more dangerous is not only inhumane but untrue. The desperate will try anything.
