This England

Well, they went for it. The government that has done harm to so many poor and ill, the government that has let people starve, tortured animals, allowed rank corruption, the government that is deleting and rewriting what it says as it says it, the government who can't deal with historical child abuse within the ranks of Westminster...that government is back in power.
Realistically, Ed Milliband was never a good choice, and the purge of the party can only be a good thing, but they have a long way to go. My feeling is that England, always right leaning, has caved into the pressure of the bought and paid for right wing press; exacerbated by Labour's lack of distinct policies and lack of distinct leader, they fell back on old tropes, and, there's no getting past it, personal greed and deliberate blindness must have been some factor in all this.
Lovely friends suggest going North of the Border. My father's country. That sounds nice. Thing is, you need one hell of a long spoon to sup with the Tory Devil, and he gives nothing for free. So say Scotland gets devomax and a yearly amount from the government and say Scotland raises its own funds, all well and good. But say it needs more, because looking after your society and your NHS can be pricey. The same government that does not help the English in need will not help the Scottish in need. We'll start hearing stuff about 'living within your means' and all the rest of that blather. If Scotland goes independent, given time to develop its own economic cycle it could emerge a very happy land, but long before that, Westminster would suck out as much as possible prior to leaving; Scotland might become very poor indeed...and poverty drives wages down. This England would have no problems with a land of cheap desperate workers on its doorstep. It might sneer about immigrants, but it would use them - it uses everything. Such a scenario would suit This England much better than a happy strong neighbour with left-wing principles - the last thing Westminster would want its viewing public to see!
There is a part of me that wants to really get involved in politics, to join the Labour Party and start a real fight, a fight that can be won. But there's no winning to be done if this corruption is in the heart of the people. If they want a wasteland, they will have it. I just don't want to join them there.
"They have injured the finest mind; for sometimes, Fanny, I own to you, it does appear more than manner: it appears as if the mind itself was tainted.”
- Mansfield Park, Jane Austen
