'Be bold, be bold, be not too bold

Lest that your heart's blood should run cold.'
From England and France, Mr Fox and Bluebeard, two serial killers immortalised in fairy tales. Stabbings in Camden last night, 6 people dead since New Year. The two boys last night were 17 and 19.
So many children dying by the deliberate acts of others. There's always huge outcry about American school shootings, these terrible things that make our blood run cold; and there's all the business about guns. Well, I would rather face a knife than a gun, because the killer must close in to hurt you, and if he has to cover the space, you have a moment, plus he can't get more than one person unless he's super fast, the difference between blade and bullet. There now, that's the wisdom of PTSD; assume they want to kill you and use every second you have. The most terrifying thing I find now about facing that knife long ago, was my moment's shocked stillness at the beginning. I was so lucky he was out of his mind, that he switched the light on. If he had crept round the side of the bed in the dark I would not be here. My initial PTSD symptoms included endlessly chopping meat with knives so I would never be afraid of them again - and it kind of worked - but when all is said and done, if someone offered me the right to keep and use a gun, I would m take it. Where would I keep such a weapon? Unless it was under my bed, it wouldn't have helped me. I'm more likely to keep it in my handbag and end up shooting the bottom out of my purse. Still, despite the commonsense objections, yes, I would carry a gun.
They call it an American sickness, and call for the constitution to be amended. I find little proper in commentary on another country's foundational laws when our own are being abused so thoroughly. American cultural experience includes the understanding that your government may not be your friend. While there is a strong history of protest in this country, in the end we are used to obedience in the expectation that our government will do what's best for us. I suspect that's pretty dangerous.
Back to Mr Fox and Bluebeard: a dedicated killer will use what they can find. How to stop them? In her journal Mallory's_Camera speaks of denying them their moment of fame, but that spotlight on the individual happens less here. It might be for glory among their coterie perhaps, but they'll keep their faces out of the news for as long as they can.
I have no idea what works beyond trying to create better options for the chronically dispossessed and mentally ill. For mini-gangster murderers who think they're cool, I honestly think 18 years in a shithole is a modest start.
