Well hmm.

Southern Spain in July away from the sea. Hmmm.

When it came to the issue of where to stay, received wisdom in Andalusia is that Granada is cooled by the mountains above it, the snow peaked Sierra Nevada. R said that surely was wrong, that Granada would be a kind of heat sink. I wasn't convinced but eh, what do I know of physics or meteorology? What I do have is experience of the country, and on reflection, I should have been more decisive when expressing my doubts about the weather. But then I hate to be a killjoy, and if everyone wants Southern Spain, who am I to say no? I love the place!

So we have gone for a place about an hour and a bit out of the city, accessible to Cordoba, Jaen, Baeza, possibly Seville, and some national parks. I pricked my ears up at the sound of the Sierra de Andujar having wolves and didn't believe it (too many private hunting estates out there) but the place does have Iberian lynxes and a wildlife company operating out of my mum's birth town can take us on wildlife treks to see them. I would be keen, but this is the information they gave me:

July is not the best time to do a wildlife tour in our area usually we get 42-45 degrees in Sierra de Andújar , and what we usually do in that occasion is to try the observation of the lynx and other wildlife late in the afternoon until the evening (half day) from 18:00 pm to 22:00 pm more or less. Is very difficult to observe other species during the day because of the temperatures. We usually include a local picnic for dinner. We often see the lynx in summer, because the countryside is too dry and they look for food and water in the same areas.

Which sounds great for me, but I can't see my companions approaching this idea with enthusiasm. 42 to 45 degrees! And that's in the hills. I have just checked and Granada tends to top out at 42 degrees, while Cordoba can hit temperatures just under 47. Suddenly plans for lots of sightseeing, or even hiking through the mountains, may look less tempting. I suspect there will be much doing of nothing by the pool.

Moral of this story? FFS Boot, accept that sometimes you know what you're talking about. Speak up.
