The Flood

Well that was an interesting dream, born of a day of social distancing chat with a couple of neighbours. We invited them to the garden, hand sanitiser and paper towels at the ready, and we drank dutifully far from each other. They brought their own glasses.

After they left we threw some coals into the chimenea, ate, listened to music, talked. When I slept, I dreamed of being back in Devizes, close to the entry to St John's Church, when a great flood came bursting through the streets down towards us, out of the street of my very first days, and down like a great tidal wave. All I could think was; We'll have to swim. But somehow we didn't. This made no sense because the part of the town where we stood was lower than the surrounding area which had all been taken by the water. The flood had started from above where we stood, but the way to Church and graveyard stayed clear; either that or I had been drowned by the rushing wave and didn't realise it.
