Wanting Out
Jul. 28th, 2021 01:52 pmJust how much do I need this holiday?
I am worn out. The whole claustrophobic fog of Brexit Britain lies thick across our media. Shops in England, Scotland and Wales are running low on supplies, and the Right screams 'pingdemic' while hauliers and retailers assure us it's Brexit rather than Covid; drivers feel unwelcome, don't fancy waiting in paperwork queues etc. Certainly there seem to be no shortages in Europe. We've suffered no lack personally, though I've heard reports of bare shelves from South East England to Fort William.
Civil rights are being chewed away everywhere we look, corruption and cronyism is so rife in government they don't even conceal it beyond bad lying. Lunatics decry the RNLI for saving migrant lives in danger on the sea; apparently such people should just be left to drown. A crazy anti-vaxxer grabs a megaphone and talks in Trafalgar Square comparing doctors and nurses to criminals at the Nuremberg trials. 'They hung!' she screams triumphantly and the crowd cheers. Priti Patel introduces a bill ferociously cruel towards refugees, while our press squeaks about the Olympics no-one can attend and a 2 million pound tourist 'mound' at Marble Arch that's been branded the worst attraction in London.
It's like living in a cupboard full of crazy goblins.

Date: 2021-07-28 02:55 pm (UTC)Yes. Yes it is. Here as well as there. And, as the second wave seems poised to crash upon our shore, I greatly fear that the new health mandates which that will necessitate will bring a concurrent wave of physical violence, perhaps even the civil war that the craziest of the crazies were once denounced and then dismissed for advocating...

Date: 2021-07-28 03:39 pm (UTC)And the fact that food supplies running low are down to Brexit would be forgotten in a sea of bulldog expressions and union jacks.
I'm sorry to hear things are difficult where you are, and wish safety to you and yours. May the goblins never find you!

Date: 2021-07-29 12:43 pm (UTC)But anyway, yes. The situation in the U.S. is Not Good either.
The migrant stuff in particular is really insane to me. Since birth rates in the U.S. are plummeting, and the entire U.S. economy depends upon an ever-expanding GDP, it's really clear to me tht we need immigrants. So, I don't get the villagers with the torches and pitchforks at all. It's a kind of superstitous, irrational phobia that haa the potential to morph very easily into full-scale fascism.

Date: 2021-08-06 03:57 am (UTC)The Migrant stuff is mad all around. As you say, we need immigrants; this has become evident here with our sudden shortage of agricultural labour and lorry drivers... And suddenly the people realise it, though there's a kind of wilful nonsense argument about forcing people on benefits to do this work, as though poor people across the land could take busses to random fields and start picking!
I don't know how deep the crazy goes. Here it has been deliberately inflamed as a more attractive scapegoat than government. I believe right now the UK is in a proto-fascist phase. God knows where it leads.
