Yes, but is it art?
Nov. 24th, 2022 12:36 pmAI art continues to be a very easy stimulus; this may answer its own question.
Unfortunately nobody likes this answer.
AI art is about finding the right or at least an interesting combination of prompts to generate a desired pic. For someone who delights in the random, it's pure joy, for someone who has a vision in their head and wants an artificial intelligence to translate it perfectly, not so much. The results can be very smooth - smooth enough to grace the fronts of endless Hallmark cards and Department store cafes - but there can be something slightly blah about them. Pencil sketches can be as perfect and intricate as if... well, as if an AI put them together. Likeness can be perfect, photo realism is a very big thing in AI art. But then, why not take an actual photo?
And everything is derivative, which is the real issue with it. Part of your prompt might be 'like Matisse, like Jack Kirby, like Artemisia Gentileschi.' Combine them and the results might be truly original (mine were very bland)but some derivation must be there. Of course, you could argue this with any form of art anywhere. But who is going to be the next creator of a distinct and unique singular style that can then be used as an AI art prompt? Other AI art prompts I suppose.
Because I do this as mere noodling while I try to work out what to write next, it's not a problem. It's just my contrarian streak that prefers a fun disaster to a dull success. Yesterday's competition is Comic Book. I will get further with

But the latter makes me smile, and the former makes me shrug.
